the car needed rotor and pads I bleed the brake system and released the pressure but when I put the spreader inside the caliper the piston will not spread enough to get the pads on.

Okay the new rotor is on the axle the caliper is off the bracket the brake lines off the caliper the caliper piston will not release pressure to put the new pads on.

I think your are working on the rear of the car, so I will show you what needs to be done to compress the piston back into the caliper for the rear axle. This requires a special tool that will turn the piston in as it is being compessed, the parking brake has a ratchet system built into it and requires the piston to be screwed back in, see pictures below.

The information I provided you above is for the rear axle. The piston needs to be turned to get back into the caliper as it is being compressed. You will need the special tool to do this.

 

Harbor Freight sells this tool kits for around $25.00
