Question

07 Pontiac Solstice GXP (turbo). Note: This engine is Direct Injection, with a very high fuel pressure system. Engine goes into Spark Retard, most noticeable in 4th gear when accelerating from 3K to redline. retards anywhere from -2 to -12. Engine compression is normal, 100psi on first stroke to 125 on 4th stroke on all 4 cylinders. Leak Down Check, shows no leakage. Getting audible noise from "fuel feed line canister," about one click per second at idle, click increases as rpm is increased. The fuel feed line canister gets fuel from the high pressure fuel pump. No other abnormal sounds. Checked most engine components for tightness and checked for loose grounds. Idle is normal, no indications of misfire at idle or high rpm, just does not have the normal engine power it used to have prior to negative spark retard showing up. Spark retard is read with MSD Dashhawk. No engine codes have been thrown on the DIC system in the car or with the Dashhawk. Frank

Optional Information

2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP 2L DI turbo

Already Tried:
Compression test, cylinder leak down test, checked for loose grounds, checked for loose engine components. Engine has reflashed ECU, high flow converter, high flow exhaust, larger intercooler and cold air intake. Engine ran great with all of the above installed but has since developed the spark retard problem. The ECU was the last mod and hade been installed for about 700 miles prior to the spark knock problem

Greg: Re flash by Westers Garage in Canada, the owners name is Lyndon. He is the first and only good tune person in North America on the Solstice GXP and Sky Redline. At first I thought it was bad gas also, but tried several different 93 octane brands over a 6 week period from GA, NC, SC, TN and KY. Talked with several other Solstice/Sky Forum members in the south and no one is having the same problem. The problem has gradually increased over time. At first it was a very slight power loss but it has now reached a point where spark retard is coming on with less and less load on the engine. Engine temps, exhaust, water and oil remain normal. LTFT is rather high, +15 at times. Other readings from the Dashhawk are pretty normal. Ignition advance is normal, high of 40 in cruise when I take my foot off the gas to anywhere from 2 to 10 plus at idle. On Oct 21st I got the following readings:
Engine Temp 189F
Outside Air Temp 56F
Inlet Air Temp 58F
3K RPM steady state cruise spark advance 38 degrees advanced
3K to 5K acceleration run, spark advance 9 degrees decreasing to 5 degrees
3K to 5K Spark Retard 4.5 decreasing to 3 decreasing to 1.2 decreasing to 0.

Now the engine goes into spark retard with just minor load increases from -3 to -12 degrees driving on level roads.

I have not checked the EGR valve or checked for a bad knock sensor. I know there is no carbon buildup in the combustion chamber by reading the plugs and I have also changed the plugs with no improvement.

I believe it is showing spark retard due to (1) the K sensor picking up a knock; (2) knock sensor or circuit is bad; (3) fuel feed line is making a clicking noise and the noise is being picked up by the K Sensor. I have insulated the fuel feed line but the spark retard remains the same. The fuel feed line does have a dampener and valve inside the canister per a GM employee.

I can get into more detail with you if you want. Let me know how you want to proceed. I have free long distance phone service so I could call you if you desire. Thanks Frank
