Have a whirlpool estate dishwasher. Recently the cycles to not advance , and I need to manually advance the control knob manually. What causes this ?

The 'rinse' cycle is the one that mostly gets stuck. I have to advance that one.

There is a bad cog on one or two gears, The timer motor runs from the minute you tell it to start until it shuts off. if it misses one of the cogs it will hang up there. replacing the timer is the recommended repair for this item. This part item
