Question

Got the degital conversion box, hooked it up, and on one station it works great. On three other stations, however, there is a "no signal" note. But, when I go back to analog the signal is crystal clear. What gives?

Answer

Greetings XXXXXXX, while the conversion to digital while be final in February of next year, it depends on your area and how many stations are currently broadcasting in digital along with the analog signal to determine what you will pick up. Some stations have not yet completed the upgrade quite yet and are still making the final preparations. If you could list your location (city or town, not your address) I can look up the current status of stations in your area.

Grady, Alabama zip 36036. Actually channel 8 (CBS) for example has made the switch and advertised it heavily. I pick up channel 12 (NBC) clearly but no channel 8 yet it was clear as a bell in analog just10 minutes before the switch. I suppose the conversion box has no adjustment?

Answer

Does your antenna system receive UHF (14-83) as well as VHF (2-13)?
Most of the stations, even though they broadcast on VHF normally in analog, are broadcasting on UHF for the digital signal. If you can give me the call letters of the stations it will help me to look them up to confirm how they are broadcasting in your area. As of today there are 1,613 stations broadcasting in digital and I'm trying to narrow them down.

Answer

Update: I did find the TV station list for Montgomery, AL and it shows that WAKA (CBS) is broadcasting digitally on Channel 55 in the UHF band. If your antenna is not able to pick up channels in that part of the UHF frequencies then you won't be able to receive the digital signal.
If, however, you have been getting UHF channels then there may be another issue. Let me know.

Headed out the door for the weekend. Will get back w/ you Monday. The channels I have been receiving (and still do analog) are: 32 ABC, 20 FOX, 12 NBC (good digital and analog w/ converter off). Since I am recieving channel 12 NBC's digital signal, what is its digital broadcast signal channel? Just to see if it is in the range you are talking about. Will also try and find the paperwork on my ant which is way up inside the attic. Talk to you Monday.

Okay, here's a quick review: Analog receive now 32abc, 20fox, 12nbc, 2/26pbs. Was receiving 8cbs before they stopped tx analog 1Dec. Digital receive now 12nbc. With converter box on when I select any other channel (32, 20, 8, 2/26), I get a "no signal" sign. With converter box off/standby I get all the above except 8cbs. I guess the question is twofold: is the converter box bad? /or/ does my ant receive both uhf and vhf signals? Can you tell from the above info if my ant can receive both uhf and vhf?

Answer

From what I read, it appears you are getting at least up to channel 32 on UHF analog so there is UHF capability. However, from the list above, there are more channels than you indicate but may be an issue of signal strength such as 29, 41 and 45. One thing I can suggest is going into the menu to manually select the channels to see what happens. I didn't put a header row in my list but the last two columns are Analog and the Digital channel numbers. There is a Signal Strength on the remote which should indicate a low signal even if the picture is not there.

Okay, will try signal strength this w/end. By the way, can I accept so you can get paid and we can continue the discussion until solved?

Answer

I have no problem waiting. I don't expect payment unless I have sufficiently helped with your problem anyway. You can get back to me this w/end when convenient for you.

Over the w/end I tried 32abc, 20fox, and 8cbs manually with no joy and zero signal strength. It is appearing as if signal strength is probably the problem. It is just hard to u/stand why I am getting a station crystal clear analog yet zero signal digital; the digital signal must be more "discriminating?" Anyway, I appreciate your helping me through this. I might try another ant; is there anything to this "smart ant" thing? Thanks again for your help.

If I knew exactly what you had beginning with your antenna type ( VHF, UHF, combination), whether or not you have an amplifier, the type of wire used (round cable or twin-wire flat), how long a run of wire, how old it is, and if you have more than the one tv, I could tell you pretty much what you may or may not need. I've done antenna work for almost 40 years but in this case, not being able to see it makes it difficult for me to assess. I'm sure you can probably find someone capable in your area, just don't let them talk you into more than you need. Good luck and best to you for the holidays.
