Question
My friend owns her home, but is behind on the property taxes. She just started a new job (first in 6 years since her husband died) and can't afford the back tax payments. She is afraid that she will lose her home. Can she make "token" payments toward the tax bill to derail a potential tax lein and losing her home? She lives in Katy, Texas, outside of Houston.

Answer
What she needs to do is contact the tax collector and make payment arrangements. Most tax collectors do not want to take people's properties but they need to show they are doing their jobs. She may have to make more than token payments but her best way out of this is contact the tax collector and explain her situation and see what can be worked out. As we all know there is no way out of paying the taxes but if she needs to set up the lines of communication.
