Question

There is a roaring sound coming from underneath my 2003 Tahoe. As I accelerate, the roar frequency also increases with speed. Any idea what this could be? Thanks

Welcome Mark. The first couple of things that pop to mind is the front wheel bearings and possible u-joints. Does it change as you move left and right? What speeds make it worse?

There are times when the noise goes away completely. When it first started, it only went away when I turned to the left,

Can you describe the location and the speeds it changes and gets worse?

The noise is coming from the front portion of the Tahoe. It begins to roar as soon as I begin to pick up speed. As I get faster, the roaring sound frequency increases, but not at the rate that a wheel turns. I estimate that is makes approximately 1 roar per second if I'm going 30 mph. This noise happens even when I am going perfectly straight.

Do you have it in 4wd or auto?

It's in drive and just 2WD. I've been scared to try to switch to 4WD...

I would now lift the front end, drop the front drive shaft and turn the front pinion by hand. See if it feels rough.
