Hello,
The proper way to diagnose this is to test for lack of fuel or spark. This is the only way you are going to narrow it down. You can check for spark by removing a plug wire and installing a spark tester. If spark is present, then you will need to install a fuel pressure tester. Both of these tests have to be performed at the time of it not starting, otherwise you will get false readings. You can rent these testers from most auto parts stores, some will even loan them to you for free. Now,,,i wil say that by FAR the most common reason this type of failure happens is the fuel pump (in gas tank),,,,once they get hot, after driving foe awhile, they loose pressure and the fuel injection system shuts down. This is EXTREMLY common.
Thats a good reading,,,specs are 40-47
Does this have the HEI dist ignition system, or the DIS (distributorless system?
Thanks,
Is or has the check engine light come on?
Thats correct.
Lets try pulling any stored diagnostic codes, this will help alot.
Let me know what you find,,,,post back whenever you can.
Sorry for the delay,
Its located under dash, just to the right of steering column.
Hi,
That just means the system for retreiving codes is working, but sure doesnt help matters with diagnosing this :-(
If your fuel pressure is good it must be a lack of spark. The problem is it can be a number of things causing this. I'm going to go out on a limb and say its the crank sensor, but its hard for me to be certain. Here is a link that has a full troubleshooting procedure for testing all the involved components in the ignition system. It could take you awhile to run through it all, but if you have time and patience you CAN track it down. Its just that it would take forever for us to go back and forth to hunt it down online. Once again, the crank sensor is very common to fail on these vehicles. Click Here
Best of luck my friend!
