Question

I have an 04 silverado w/the 8100 & Allison. There is 37,000 miles on it. I found two broken exhaust manifold bolts broken. I bought this used from a dealer a year ago. Was there any problems with this. This is the second 8100 I have had. Had no problems with other one. Also, was there any issues with emerg. brakes? Has not worked since I got the truck. found right rear lever stuck in full on. Linings are gone. left side barley works. Was there any recalls on this? I know there was for man, trans. The truck is a K3500 chasiss cab with plow amd dump. Thankyou for your time. Walter

Answer

Hi Walter. We have had some broken exhaust bolt issues on these trucks, more so on the 6.0L engines. We have had good success removing the broken piece by welding a nut onto the what's left of the bolt. Some times we've had to weld the nut on 2 or 3 times in order to get the broken bolt out, We haven't had to pull a cylinder head yet.

In regards to the emergency brake, I checked the recall and it applied only to the manual transmission as you suspected. There were some new retainers released in 2005. I'm sure the dealer will have this information or I could post the bulletin for you.

why are manifold bolts breaking at this stage? From what I see, that quality of GM's materials is junk. Thats one factor, the other is the truck was abused before I got it. This is the 6th one ton I have owned since 2000. Every truck has had its issues. I know ford had its issues with the V10. but this is not a ford. My 02 I had with the 8100, crew cab dually, I worked the snot out of that truck. This one has been problems from the getgo. But, back to intial question. I know how to extract broken maifold bolts. Either GM had a problem with this, or I got a lemon. I wanted to know if there was issue's that GM was not telling us or if there was a recall.

Accepted Answer

There hasn't been a recall on the manifold bolts. We don't see a lot of this kind of failure. The ones we do see are usually vehicles that have seen quite a bit of off-road use. I work a medium sized GM dealership in Canada. Just going from memory I'd say we do about 6 to 8 repairs a year.
