Hello,
You have many options with today's internet so Thank you for choosing JustAnswer.com.
It sounds like one of the shift solenoids is quiting. Have you checked it for codes in the computer? If you manually shift it from L to 2 the D and then push the O/D button can you make it shift all the gears every time up and down?

It takes a minute when I downshift, but it does eventually downshift manually, no, I haven't checked the codes
Click the link below and let me know if there are any codes. I will get back to your reply tomorrow. I am calling it a night.

The code 42 is for a malfunctioning speed sensor that is built into the combination meter. You need a scope to check this. The code 62 is an open or short in the number one shift solenoid in the transmission. Check the solenoid for continuity and functionality. Pull the negative battery terminal to clear the codes and drive and recheck to see if both of the codes come back. Either one of them will cause weird shifting problems. If this repair is something you are going to tackle yourself let me know.
Yeah, I would like to repair myself
I would like to repair myself, I am sure it would be a lot cheaper than taking it to a dealer
Click the links below for the info on the solenoid. I would check and repair the solenoid then retest or check for the speed sensor code. Remember code 62 is for the number 1 solenoid there are several solenoids make sure you are working on the right one.
