Question

My minpins have been getting dry bumpy spots on their backs and sides that they scratch and lose their hair. at first they look like patches of dry skin but their hair comes out and the skin is bare and irritated. At the same time on their bellies they get these round red rings that seem brown in the middle of them. Just one or two of them. I have taken one to the vet which they say it is an allergy possibly, and have given steroid shots, and special shampoos but still the spots continue, and the dogs seem miserable. Any suggestions?

Already Tried:
Virbac Keratoulux, and Virbac Allergroom Shampoos
and Cortizone shot about 3-4 weeks ago. Last year the
female had the same thing but not the male. It was in
the fall as well. But the male seems worse since he has
been affected. I also use Douxo spray.

Answer

It is likely an allergy, but your vet should be giving 4 weeks of antibiotics along with the steroid shot, or this will not heal properly. In addition, they should be ruling out mites or other parasites by skin scraping. This will tell them if there are mites, and also wether the infection is primarily fungal, bacterial, or a mix of both. Then they can give the appropriate medications-both topical and oral.

Skin conditions due to allergies (this sounds like it is) are generally hard to cure. They are usually only managed.

Talk to your vet about management of allergies, or find a vet who can truly help your dog's with this.

I also started them on one pill a day of Clavimox 62.5mg which is something I had left from a year ago when the female had this problem, do you recommend this or no? Is there anything else i should be doing? What about bathing habits..what do you recommend. We have been bathing them with the special shampoos once a week for now, is this too much or should we be doing it more often? I also read somewhere that putting t-shirts on them may help prevent them from scratching at the spots..do you think this would be helpful for the skin to heal or no?

Answer

If you are bathing them with the right shampoo, twice weekly is what I recommend. I am not familiar with the shampoo you mentioned. Depending on the infection (bacteria vs yeast) I recommend Malaseb or other veterinary products.

The Clavamox is old, throw it out. It would not have been my first choice for a skin infection, and as I said...4 weeks of antibiotics to heal the skin. Any shorter, and the infection tends to return. Many vets do not treat this long, but it is what the dermatologists recommend.

You can either keep a shirt on the dog, or booties on their feet.

Thanks for your help! do you have an antibiotic that you would recommend that i can get from the vet? Is there a good way to find out whether it is bacteria or yeast infection?? will this factor into which antibiotic will work best?? is the malaseb a shampoo or an antibiotic?

Accepted Answer

Malaseb is a shampoo.

I use a cephalosporin...there are many types, and your vet should use whatever they are familiar with.

Your vet should scrape the skin to find out if there is yeast/bacteria. This is simple to do, and they look at the scraping under the microscope.
