Question

I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy 2.5 ltr. my wife called me today saying the heater wasn't putting out heat. i asked what the temp gauge said, it was running hot. I went to rescue and found it was low on water. I filled and started and it ran fine and temp was in normal range. I drove car home 20 miles and operated fine untill almost home and temp climbed for me too. I changed thermastat and refilled. Took for test drive started out first 5 miles ok temp then would vary up ad down untill it again ran up to Hot after 10 miles so I went home and looked at tank and it was over full and I saw bubbles in tank as it was idling. Top radiator hose hot, lower cold, water in tank cold. Water pump changed at 108,000 it now has 113.000 miles I haven't checked compresion yet. Are these symptoms of head gasket? It runs real good, no loss of power or skipping.

Accepted Answer

If it is running good it is very unlikely that it it a head gasket. You obviously have a leak some were if you cant find it your selt you might have to get it pressure tested. The reason you were seeing bubles in the overflow tank is if you fill up the rad. and dont let it bleed out with the cap off and the engine running you will get air trapped in the cooling system. Let me know if you need ANY more help!
