Question

I have become very regretful and bitter lately and have lots of negative thoughts especially at night and have been unable to cope so well at work (nurse) and I am lonely, single, socially shy and have no idea where to start to change my life which I would dearly love to do. I come from dysfunction and have a history of depression/anxiety/alcohol abuse. Can you recommend books and CD's to rewire this sad brain please ...

Optional Information

Age: 47; Female, Australia

Already Tried:
I have had three years with psychologists once a month which is not really doing much as once a month is not enough to change a lifetime of negative thinking. I have read some books over the years. I have had two treatments on antidepressants which helped but I'm reluctant to use again - open to natural alternatives though. I have tried exercise which is the best solution yet but have injury from work preventing activity at present. Have noticed marked difference since stopping exercise. Have tried to be open and honest with family and self ...feeling very tired of mental anguish and 'enemy within'.

I'm glad to hear that exercise has been helpful for you and would definitely recommend your continuing with that as often as possible.

As far as books go, there are lots of books designed to help people manage negative thinking (and the ways that it exacerbates anxiety and depression). Most of these books are based on what's called Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or CBT for short. You could do a simple search on Amazon.com for any CBT books and loads would turn up for you. There is also a great website called www.moodgym.com that is based on the CBT model for altering negative thoughts- it's an interactive site that you could play with and personalize for you.

It might also help for you to talk more openly with your therapist about what is and isn't working for you in the therapy. Many therapists are able to adapt their style to better suit your needs but they probably won't do this unless you are clear with them that something isn't working.
