Question

Have 1998 Mercery mystique, on ice hit curb with passanger front tire. has moved front tire out of alignment with front drivers tire by approx 1/4 inch, tires were turned all the way to the drivers side and passanger tire contacted with curb on passanger door side of tire. Here is my question-as tie rod comes from the steering box on the back side of the front struts, and where the ball joint hooks onto the passanger front spindle? in this type of impact where would the weak point be, does the tie rod bend? Has it just put the wheels out of alignment,I have car up on jacks and have removed the front tires, useing a socket on the end of a string, have checked plumb to see if anything is out of wack, everything looks good but the passanger side spindle? appears to be out, passanger side tire when wheels straight has a out toe of about 1/4 inch? Where the ball joint hooks onto the spindle you can see where all-most of the years of crud has been removed (flaked off from impack)???

Hello XXXXXXXXX, and welcome to JustAnswer.com!

Here's what you need to do... visit a scrapyard, and get a lower control arm, knuckle (spindle) assembly, and a strut. Most likely all three of these have at least some kind of bend to them as a result of the impact.

You have to realize that a bend a couple of hundredths of a degree can translate into a much larger alignment change, and not all damage is going to be visible. More often than not, we have to figure out what is bent by analyzing alignment readings. Being it appears that you don't have that available to you, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Tie rod ends can and do bend, but this is usually very noticable as a 5-10 degree bend in the small shaft of the inner tie rod end. If it appears to be straight, then most likely it is o.k.

I would say that most frequently the lower control arm gets bent. About 50-60% of the time the strut is bent as well, and about 25% of the time the knuckle (spindle) is out of whack.

Good luck!
