Question

The brake pedal has changed recently and it is much harder to depress in the last quarter stroke and feels very spongy. I am also having a tail lamp failure come up in dash even after all tail lights have been checked including, indicator, hazard, brake, and reverse lights. Another question is whether this is fly by wire controls with an artificial feel device or a purely mechanical spring and hydraulic system.

Answer

Hello and thank you for using just answer. TO clarify a few things for you here.
1- fly by wire, yes the accelerator system on your car was the first design electronic throttle system
2-The tail lamp indicator only monitors the rear brake and tail lights that come on with the headlamps on, it does NOT monitor turn/reverse/tag lights in the rear. If all of your bulbs appears good but the warning still comes on then I'm willing to bet that if you replace the third (highmount) brake light bulbs it will resolve the issue.
3-the brakes on this car are normally spongy/soft, if you have owned this car for several years to get an accurate feel for it then I recommend you: 1- get the brakes inspected for abnormal pad wear that would indicate a rusted/seized brake component 2-get the brake system flushed.

The fluid has been flushed in the last six months. If you depress the pedal all the way, release it and depress it again the resistance becomes greater and the stroke becomes about 1/2" shorter each time. You must let the pedal stay at rest for about 5-10 seconds before it is possible to depress all the way.

I suppose the brake inspection is the next step but I'd appreciate a little more description as to what brake component would cause such odd pedal behavior.

You're doing an excellent job and certainly deserve a bonus for the expediant response.

My last question is about the headlights. I am experienceing a porblem where the right headlight will sometimes go out. The bulb differs slightly in color, it is tinted slightly more purple than the left headlight which appears bluish white. I'm aware that the tint is indicative of a worn bulb but do you think the intermittent headlamp activity is due to the bulb or could it possibly be a relay or balast issue?

HID lighting was standard in 2001 on the LS. THe conditon you mention....a few thoughts. First if the bulbs have 2 colors then 2 possible things here. 1- possible discoloration variances in the lenses, I have replaced headlamps (reused same bulbs) on these and other Lexus/toyota cars and the headlamps project 2 different colors at night. 2- the bulb, I always replace HID bulbs in pairs, they are never the same color if you replace just one, this car may have had 1 bulb or lamp replaced. As far as the light sometimes going out....first check to see if moisture ever appears in the lens area, the headlamp control ECU is inside the headlamp and moisture causes big issues here, if the lamp is dry then plan on replacing a bulb soon, this is a indicator that the bulb is nearing failure, these bulbs are several hundred dollars each and in my experience the Genuine Lexus supplied bulbs have the longest life.

Back to the brakes, there is a slide pin that holds the brakes in place on each caliper, you need to be sure that pins can be moved aroudn a little and is not rusty on each caliper, if corrosion/rust forms it can inhibit pad movement and cause all sorts of odd brake issues. Also be sure that the pads are still thick. Caliper failure does not happen on these cars, solid aluminum construction. I would also highly recommend you drive a 2001 to 2004 LS to compare this to, I am not saying you do or do not have an issue here but the brakes on this car are hard to get accustomed to, they are very soft, thsi car was designed to be comfortable for a elderly owner with minimal braking effort.

I have a very good feel for the car, I've owned it for a couple years now and the brake problem occurred recently out of nowhere. The brake becomes so stiff it feels as though the rubber floor mat or a plastic water bottle is stuck beneath it.

I'll take it to the dealer and I appreciate you giving me the detailed description of the most likely cause.

Would you be able to answer questions pertaining to poor acceleration in this thread or must I start a new one?

I am experiencing some lag in acceleration and it is beyond the normal expected lag of an automatic transmission or traction control system. I was wondering what maintenance could be done to help it's increasingly sluggish low rpm behavior. I have noticed it occurring in the last six months and I was hoping it was just due to the less dense hot air that comes with summer. The drive has gotten to the point where you can no longer ignore the lack of power and throttle delay. I'm thinking new spark plugs, new injectors, cleaning the ICV and maybe the MAF will help. Can you steer me towards the most likely culprit? I'm very good about oil changes and replacing air filters, so we can rule that out.

Is it a requirement to run synthetic oils on this V8 or is it fine with conventional oil? I purchased it and it was already running conventional so I haven't put synthetic in it in fear of carbon release blocking oil holes.

Thanks for the response.

Answer

I own several Lexus vehicles myself, I always run synthetic oil in mine but that is not requires, just cheap insurance against unneeded leaks/failures. First how many miles are on this car? Do you ever get a chek engine light on? Do you have access to a scan tool with data list liv readings?

I do not have a OBD scanner but I can purchase one and give you the codes if it means staying away from the dealer. The local dealer here in west Houston is useless. I paid for a full diagnostics to examine the air suspension unit and they simply told me I needed to replace all four struts at $1500 a piece. They only had it on a lift less than 5 minutes. The suspension problem goes unresolved but we can tackle that one later. I do have a check engine light and it only came on two days ago. The vehicle has a little over 84k miles.

Ok a low mileage LS!

You can purchase a cheap scan tool from any auto parts store for around $40 but it won't read data list, just codes. If you want to keep this cheap then what I want you to do in the morning is find a large auto parts store such as advanced auto/auto zone/etc....most of these large retail chain parts stores now offer a FREE code check service in attempt of selling more aftermarket junk parts. If you can get a free code scan then get the 4 digit code #'s and relay them to me. We can better address this from there.

Which type of aftermarket scanner will give you the data list?

The one you showed me the link to will show live data but I'm not too familiar with it, I have a $12,000 toyota scan tool made by panasonic/snap-on that is specifically designed for toyota/lexus cars. Right now you only need code #'s, do you really want to spend that kind of # at this point or do you think it will pay off over time? I'm also about to log out for the night...actually it's morning now, long day.

The code is P0155. I believe it refers to the O2 sensor on the exhaust before the cat.

Posted by Peter 364 days and 3 hours ago.

Answer

Thank you for the reply. This is a somewhat "common" failure but usually does not happen until high mileage, the code is for a heater failure in the 02 sensor on bank 2 sensor 1. Your car has 4 sensors. Yes this is the pre-cat sensor on the passenger side.

THe sensor will need to be replaced.

2 recommendation I have here on this repair.

1- purchase this from the dealer, I could give you 100 reasons why but just follow my advise on this one

2- soak the sensor threads down with penetrating oil such as PB blaster or wd-40 and let it sit for at least 4 hours before you attempt this repair, for some reason the sensor 1 sensors love to seize and cross thread in these manifolds.

can you provide me with a part no. for the O2 sensor required?

Also, can you guide me regarding the previous question about acceleration loss?

Posted by Peter 364 days and 3 hours ago.

Answer

Sorry I got a little absent minded there, this problem can likely be directly related to acceleration issues, the sensor controls air/fuel mixture and causes some rich issues with this code. Get the sensor fixed first and disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes to reset the memory and this should help the omputer to relearn drive patterns. You could possibly have some issues with carbon buildup in the throttle body or slightly low MAF readings but I advise tackle one thing at a time with a code stored.

Part #- they supercede these #'s all the time, call the Lexus dealer in your area and tell them you need a bank 2 sensor 1 and give them your VIN#, they will give you the correct part # and price and should have this part in stock. No this is not a good part# with Toyota so you will have to get it from Lexus. Thank you.

How do you take apart the highmount brake light housing? Do you take apart the trunk lining or do you go through the cabin? The man in the dealership told me there's no need for going through the lining and that the housing pops off from within the cabin but I'm having trouble. I just want to clarify before I snap some high priced plastic parts off.

Posted by Peter 363 days and 4 hours ago.

Answer

Stand on your knees in the back seat facting the trunk, take your fist and "smack" the housing toward the passenger side, it should slide left and then pickup to slide out/up.

Sorry this one is taking so long. I've just replaced all the bulb there with OEM bulbs including the high mount. I've reset the battery and still getting Tail Lamp Error. The bulb housings are getting burnt up and have gone from an orange to a brown so this leads me to believe that there is a grounding issue. Do you have any advice? And if you do recommend getting it done by the dealer do you know how many hours of labor I'm looking at?

Answer

This is a new problem you have thrown on top of the other issues we are currently working with on your car that I have not been made aware of before.

First you don't have to remove the battery to reset the tail lmap indicator, this resets everytime you cycle the key.

First you need to determine if this is a brake or parking lamp issue, the monitor watches both. Take the key out and turn the headlamps to the "off" position. Start the car (don't hit the brakes) and then turn on the headlamps, see if the indicator comes back on, if so then cycle the key and turn lamps off, now hit the brakes with the lights off.....what I am trying to do here is establish if the monitor recognizes a brake lamp issue, a tail lamp issue or BOTH. Once the monitor recognizes a brake light issue it stays on until the key is cycled and the problem is noticed again, with parking lamps the indicator is supposed to turn off when you turn the lamps off. We may need to open another question here.
