Greetings XXXXXX, could you provide a bit more information?
What OS are you using?
Have you tried the drive on another computer? Has it worked with this computer before?

Thanks for your response. I am using Vista Home Premium. It work before. I loaded some pictures from my Canon digital during vacations. I was able to see them in my computer but that was the last time. Why the usb sees it as WDC ROM MODEL_SCORPIO?

Answer

There is a problem with these drives, especially if you disconnect without unmounting first. The issue is probably more of a corrupted file system rather than a hardware problem.
There are a few options, none of which is simple.
One is to use a data recovery program to retrieve your information off the drive.
If you have already transferred what you need from the drive, use the Disk Management utility and reformat the drive to NTFS which is more stable than FAT32 which is how the drive comes formatted.
I hope this helps. If you need further assistance please let me know. Thank you for using Just Answer.

What kind of data recovery program can I use?

Would it work with the USB port?

I have not use yet the Disk Management Utility because I can not retrieve the data. Also, WD recommends to use only FAT32 rather than NTFS, but I would follow your advice, providing that I can retrieve my data.

I would appreciate your recommendation for data recover utility program.

Thanks

Answer

As long as your drive is recognized by windows you should be able to recover your files with recovery software. The reason for NTFS is that it is a more stable file system and WD uses FAT 32 since it is backward compatible with earlier versions of windows and is cross platform with OS X. Many recovery programs have demos available so you can see if your information is recoverable. I will post links for software in a short while.
