Hello.

He needs to contact the judge as soon as possible to let him/her know that he cannot comply with the fines that are a term of his probation and requesting an extension or payment plan to pay it off. If he waits and does not pay the fines, the probation officer can seek a warrant for his arrest for nonpayment of fines/probation violation. It is better to let the judge know in advance that he cannot pay the fines than to wait to get in trouble. If he has done well on probation, the judge might cut him a break and make arrangements for him to take care of the fine rather than sending him to jail.

Hope this helps.

Answer

No problem...and one thing I forgot to mention, if he was represented by a lawyer originally, he might want to have the lawyer draft something to send the judge. A lawyer will know how to phrase it to be most effective for your friend.
