Question

If a spouse owes an outstanding bill and it goes in default can they legally freeze a joint checking account?

Accepted Answer

The debtor may not access your joint checking account unless you agreed to put it as a collateral for the debt.

However the debtor may sue your spouse and if they win and obtain a judgment - to satisfy the judgment - a lien may be registered against any jointly owned property - including a joint checking account.
