Hi, you have a very frustrating and concerning problem.. first do not feel badly about seeking a second opinion from a different vet.. surgery would be the last thing I would try for my pet too. has she been on the same food for some time now? and what kind is it.. I have all of my dogs food allergy tested at a holistic vet I viist with my pets.. I was surprised to learn they were all allergic to poultry, some to barley and flax (try to find a food without those)... so, it could be the food.. and the switch from one food to another does not have to be slowly if they are allergic to the ingredients... I'm going to assume you have fed her boiled chicken (there is that poultry thing again) and rice to firm her stools? and you said the metroindazole worked at first then not... have you had her tested for enzyme problems and that is why you are giving the tylan powder?   they have many foods now that have limited ingredients.. I have ended up feeding my dogs the new "taste of wild" fish formula - salmon, and sweet potato .. also venison seems to work... the food allergy panel at my vet's cost 169.00 with a blood sample.. but has really helped to rule things out... I have dogs that are allergic to poultry mix, wheat, flax, barley, peas and carrots.. if she is losing weight, she should be seen by a vet (a different one i suggest) have x-rays been done to rule out any tumors in the last year. and lab work done? let me know and lets get her some help she deserves.. thanks for caring for your dog!   ...

lab work has been done, the only result was a low protine level due to her problem,,stool and blood... What would they be looking for in a bioptsy to treat with meds. they said the bio.would tell them more for what meds. to put her on? why not try moxicillin or something else befor putting her through that? what other drugs r there??

HI, In a biopsy they would be most likely be looking for cancerous cells. they can check enzyme problems via blood test.. metronidazole is a a very specific antibiotic for the stomach.. I'm surprised they did not try a longer treatment since it seemed to help... I would ask about that treatment, you are right I would not jump to surgery ... if she is having blood in her stool that would be a reason for biopsy to check for cancer though and the fact that she is low in protein suggests her intestines are not absorbing what is needed. Given her age, the blood in her stools and loss of protein is why the vet would want to biopsy.. does she eat okay if you are not adding the protein powder? any vomiting? and does her stool ever get firmer with home cooked rice and maybe a tiny bit of boiled hamburger added... as this is not a long term diet it would be something to tell you whether or not it is food related... dogs can become allergic to foods they have eaten for a long time.. maybe ask your vet for I/D food while trying another course of metronidazole and if that does nothing, you may want to consider a biopsy to know exactly what you are dealing with. Thank you for caring so much for your dog.. let me know.. i"m here to help. Susan
