Optional Information

OS: Windows XP; Browser: IE

Already Tried:
entered the system restore pgm.
several times and could not go back far enough because several days ago I removed all the prior restore points. so I could only go back five days and dowing so changed nothing. I still get the print spooler service is not running message.

Accepted Answer

XXXXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for your question.

Have you tried to manually start the print spooler service?

If not, try doing the following:

Click Start > run > type services.msc
This should bring up the services pane

Scroll down until you find print spooler, then see what the status and startup type it is.

If the print spooler is not running, highlight it then click start in the upper left, or right click print spooler and choose start in the list.

The startup type should be automatic. If it is not, right click on the print spooler and click properties. You can change the startup type here.

If it is running, try restarting the print spooler service.

Do you know if it stopped working after installing something, or has it ever worked right?

Thanks

I went to start-run-and typed in services.msc

found the print spooler

when I tryed to start the program I get this message

Error 1068 the dependency service or group failed to start

at the bottom of the screen---you can specify the start parameters that apply when you start the service from hear

at the right there is a open box past the start parameters message

You normally don't need to put in any start parameters. Is the account your using a local administrator account?

Answer

What model printer are you using?

And do you know if you have had any malware, adware, or virus' lately?

It is possible, that the reg cleaner mistakenly removed an entry that it thought was not needed. Did you backup the registry before running the cleaner? Or does the program allow you to restore what it changed?

Another cause for the error "Error 1068: The Dependency Service or Group Failed To Start" can be: Changed in the path of service exe in harddisk.

Example: if service exe location is (service properties shows) :: c:\Program files\xyz\abc\my_service.exe and if we change "xyz" to "wxy" folder and try to restart the service. it will give the above error.

To check this do the following:

1. Go to Start > Run and type in services.msc then press Enter.

2. In the window that opens find "Print Spooler" on the right

3. Right-click "Print Spooler" and select "Properties".

4. Click on the "Recovery" tab and change all 3 drop-down boxes to "Restart The Service".

5. Make sure the 2 text boxes underneath say "1" in them.

6. Click Ok until you are back at the Services window, close it and you're good to go.

7. Go back into the properties of the "Print Spooler" tab and be sure to click Start to restart the Print Spooler service and it will restart the service immediately.

Thanks

Info Request

I also found some references to possible virus infections.

In the properties of the print spooler, under the general tab, check and verify the the Path to Executable is:

C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe

If it is a virus, this might say something else, or it may have replaced it.
