Question

My primary hdd C: is a XXX XXXXXXXX XXXXX. In the last few days it has gone from having about 60 gigs of space available to being full. I have installed no new programs and no major downloads. I have run several utility programs and have found two "systems" files located in the System Volume Information folder that are approximately 53 and 66 gigabytes each (see attached jpeg).

I don't know if that is my problem or not but it seems extraordinary.

When I run my Raxco HD defragmenter on C: I find that there are 136051 megabytes of space in a category called "Excluded". this is not something I recall from prior defrag sessions.

help please -

Answer

The 136GB of xlcuded is basically saying that it was excluded from the defrag process since it is not needed or not. These 60GB and 53 GB are due to Windows System restore keeping backups for restore points. To view the size of your windows restore points you will need to goto.

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Run

In the run window type in:

cmd

Hit "ok" and at the dos prompt black screen type in

vssadmin list shadowstorage

Hit "enter" and it will list the storage size of your shadow copy such as this output below.

C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin list shadowstorage

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool

(C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

For volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{3ce0cbe2-57c2-11db-a712-806e6f6e6963}\   Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{3ce0cbe2-57c2-11db-a712-806e6f6e6963}\

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 1.335 GB

Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 1.539 GB

Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 4.395 GB

Now you will need to resize this in order to use much less space then before.

It’s easy enough to decrease the shadow copy storage area, but doing could potentially delete older shadow copies. If you need the free space more than you need a long history of shadow copies, you can decrease the storage area size.

Let’s say I decide to decrease the storage space on my D volume to 10 GB. I would use the vssadmin resize shadowstorage command as follows by using the run command as listed above and going to the black dos screen

C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=D: /For=D: /MaxSize=10GB

This would change the size on the D: drive to the max of 10GB. Whatever drive you want to run this on just subsitute the D: drive for you drive letter.

Please let me know if this helps or you require futher assistence.

Thanks,

Before i do anything i would like for you to look at the two file descriptions - can i send you a jpeg attachment with a picture of the file analysis from Glary utilities. the file names are so long and convoluted i would prefer for you to see them rather than me trying to transcribe them.

OK - that seems to have solved the problem. I have set it at 10gigs. I understand that was just an example - is it sufficient? I'm not even sure what a shadow copy is. I don't want to lose any protection I actually need. I now have over 120 gigs of free space on my primary HDD. Thanks!

Here is a brief explanation of shadow copy.

But first, let me clarify some terminology: I use the terms shadow copy and restore point throughout this article. Restore points are a special type of shadow copy because they store specific information needed during a system repair with System Restore. Restore points are created by:

Windows Vista File Backup
Complete PC Backup (in this case, a restore point is created on the source volumes, not the target volume)
The daily scheduled System Restore task
Application installations or driver installations
Shadow copies created on the Complete PC target volume are not restore points. However, both types of shadow copies can exist in the same shadow copy storage area at the same time.

As long as you regulary backup your data on a regular basis the 10GB restore point will be sufficent. Now you will not have an etire system shadow copy but Vista defaults are way to high on the default space required for this.
