Question

I own a 2001 Deville. My windows gave a big pot noise and now they won't do up or down. this has happened one at a time. I read the manual and see that it could be a fuse or a circuit breaker. Can I change these?? It this something I can do myself. (in the manal on page 6-72 to 6-74) I don't have the money to take it in.

Optional Information

2001 Cadillac Deville

Already Tried:
I thought I could just pull out a fuse and use one of the (extra) fuses stored in the BEC located under the rear seat....but when I opened the box found that there are no fuses there, only a circuit breaker...with a 30 written on top of it...I did not touch any of the fuses..

Answer

Hello XXXXXXXX,

Your power windows are connected with a circuit breaker.Use a 12 volt test lamp & make sure the circuit breaker in the rear has voltage on both sides .Here is a brief description of circuit operation.Pay close attention to electrical connecting surfaces & loose wiring connectors.

Each door module has a separate battery positive voltage circuit that it uses exclusively for power window motor operation. These circuits are associated with door module harness connectors C1, and, although the circuits are separate, they are connected within the rear fuse block where all are fed by the same PWR WDO circuit breaker. If this circuit opens at a point where the separate branches are all connected, all power windows will be inoperative. A short to ground anywhere in the circuit will open the PWR WDO circuit breaker, which will also cause all power windows to be inoperative. These circuits must not be confused with the battery positive voltage circuits associated with door module harness connectors C3.

I am just a woman trying to fix this myself. not afraid of the work, but lost you when you said to use a 12 volt test lamp. I don't have one but will go buy one...... If you can picture what I am looking at, the item that is marked in the book and the one in the box is a

thing that resembles a rectangular silver, about 1 inch by 1/2 inch and sits there like a battery....if that makes sense....can't I just pull this out and go buy a new one and fix the problem?????

Answer

Yes,you can just pull it out ,but that may not be your problem. The circuit breaker does not fail very often,It's like a circuit breaker in your house, except it has an automatic reset. The reason for checking battery voltage on both sides is if voltage it there it's ok.This circuit breaker is a fuse that resets once a circuit is shorted. This is why I suggest checking first,i believe what you are going to find is a short in the wiring harness or one of the door modules shorted.

Ok. I can relate this to the CB in my house....understand now....thanks...however, how do I find the fuse that is bad? The manual does not show a fuse for the windows, only the CB. So, if I understand this, if I find the fuse that is causing the short, I replace the fuse and go back to the CB and flip the CB switch, like I do on the CB in the house. Right?? Is this why I need the 12 volt test lamp?

Answer

There is no fuse for the power windows,it uses a circuit breaker instead of a fuse.Either of these is a system or circuit protector, they are not the problem. When voltage shorts if the fuse does not blow or the circuit breaker open ,the circuit will catch fire.Every once a while a fuse or circuit breaker will fail & sometimes the fuse will look good, this is why I check them so you are not chasing something you missed.

Thank you so much the "education...." on this. I will let you know if I can fix the problem. I did have a new cell phone charger plugged in to the lighter plug but the charger never did work, it didn't charge.....I am guessing this may have been the culprit that blew my fuses.....again, this is such a great service you do...truely earned your bucks here...thanks again
