Question

Hi. I want to be able to change my oil/filter on my 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman myself but I have a few questions first. Can you outline the procedure for me as the Mini's filter is in a very hard to reach area. I know I have to move the coolant tank out of the way but I also noticed a band clamp around the filter canister. Do I have to loosen this? What is the socket size to fit the end of the oil canister and what is the allen wrench size I need for the drain plug. Any other tips for this oil change would also be apprectiated.

Already Tried:
Haven't tried the oil change yet as when I started to see what was needed, I was surprised how this oil change presented some challenges I had never come acrosss before in other cars when changing the oil. It's usually quite straight forward but on the Mini, the filter is the canister is different than the spin on filters I'm used to and when I saw the bolt patter on the end of the cannister I stopped as I didn't have a socket that large. I also concerned about the band clamp I saw arount the cannister. Do I have to loosen it and if so, it the nut on this clamp is in a position which makes it very difficult to reach. When I do loosen it, does the exceess oil pour all over the electrical connections I see in the area or does most of the oil drain back into the engine after sitting for a while? Sure am looking forward to hearing your responses. Bye for now.

Hi,

To access the oil filter housing you will have to move the coolant reservoir

out of the way, it is simply held on with the visible 8mm screw. Once the 8mm screw is removed simply lift the coolant bottle and tilt itaway at about 45 degrees.

Sometimes there is a small plastic ring around the filter housing nut, which for some reason isn't on all of them, just remove it. If I remember rightly you'll need a 27mm socket to undo the housing, a decent length extention is also handy. You are right about the oil leaking out so be careful only to wind the housing out far enough to break the seal allowing the oil inside to drain don to the sump, otherwise you'll just end up with a mess all down the side of your gearbox. Best to drain the oil from the sump before completely removing it.

The sump drain bung is either an 8 or 10mm allen key. Oil will begin to come out the second you crack it off so be careful if it's hot and have something underneath to catch it. Make sure you replace the sump plug washer.

Be sure to always replace the seal on the filter housing as these are notorious for leaking!
