Question

I have a 97' 528i E39 that wont pass emissions do to a series of trouble codes. this motor does not have a thermastat in it at this time. the trouble codes are as follows; bank 2 sensor 1 no circuit activity (o2), fuel trim malfunction (bank 2). i just spent a hundred and twenty dollars on a new o2 sensor and i cant seem to find anyone who will tell me the location of bank 2 sensor 1. i have looked under the veichle and saw that there are two right off the mainfolds and two just past the converters. can you please tell me which one is the one that needs replaced, and will this take care of the fuel trim problem.

i am on a very tight budget due to a recent layoff and wish i could afford to pay you more, i apologize for that as i know that your time and knowledge are very valuable. my girlfriend bought this car on ebay two years ago. we flew to chicago and drove it back to phoenix. about forty miles outside of chicago the ac compressor pully wore a hole in the bypass hose for the radiator and the car got hot. hot enough to crack the thermastat housing.I repaired the hose and thats when i found out the therm. housing was cracked. I put two cans of bars in it and we drove to iowa, doing 45 mph on the shoulder because the car would not come out of S2 due to a wet sensor on the tranny. once in phoenix, i had to have 700 dollars done to the car to get through emissions. are there any other means of tuning or accessing the computer on this car that will help with performance? thank you again for your help

Answer

Hi Charlie, I'll address the first part of your post. Bank 2 sensor 1 is the sensor on the exhaust manifold for cylinders 4,5,6. That would be the rear manifold and it would be the sensor ahead of the converter, not behind it. You also need to install a thermostat in the car as well for the engine management system to function properly.

thats what i was thinking after some basic deduction, thank you very much. what i did was put my code scanner on the obd, i cleared the codes but did not re-check to make sure the code had cleared. i replaced the sensor at bank2 #1, started the car and let it idle for about 3 mins. re-checked the codes and the same code was still there. so i rotated o2 sensors through all four and the code remains. i also checked the fuses at the passenger side engine compartment. all seemed fine.is there anything else that i need to do to clear this code with the new sensor in bank 2 #1? could my code scanner be unable to clear this code? it has cleared all other codes.the remaining code is bank 2 #1 circuit no activity detected

Accepted Answer

Hi Charlie, I assume you have a code P0154. The code requires 2 drive cycles to set so if you are getting the code back immediately I would suspect your reader isn't clearing it. Otherwise I would look for an excessively lean or rich condition affecting bank 2. You need to install a thermostat before you go any further. Also make sure you have power and ground to the sensors heater.
