Question

My 14 yr old Shit Zsu has been diagnosed with a heart murmur. Vet put her on a heart medication and Lasix. she seemed to be getting worse to the point she quit eating. I quit giving her the meds and she seemed to perk up, but she refuses to eat anything - she drinks alot of water, urinates, wants to go for walk, but she is not getting any nutrition. Any clues what to do?

Dear friend,

I am so sorry your baby is ill. I do have some ideas.

Heart murmurs are graded 0ne to four:

http://www.thensome.com/heartmurmurs.htm

The meds may be maing her nauseated. Lets try some baby food.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your dog's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

Boil chicken or beef - even liver as the scent of food cooking awakens the appetite sensor in the brain.

She needs to stay hydrated and her electrolytes balanced:

oral "Rebound" beef flavored electrolyte replacement http://www.calvetsupply.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1103

Try cut up and even blended chicken, beef liver etc.

Give her one tsp of plain yogurt daily.

Please let me know if she eats any of these things.

Best wishes and prayers for her,

Terri
