Question

Whilst driving I felt something blow, stopped and checked car but found nothing visibly wrong. Started car OK but loss of power while driving. Orange warning light with a coil motif was flashing until I turned off the engine about 3 miles later. Engine re-starts and idles OK but once revs increased, splutters and is virtually un-drivable. Car is VW Golf 1997 1.9 TDI Comfort from Italy. I am in France. Any idea's on what's wrong ? What is the warning light with the coil motif.

Hi and Welcome to justanswer..

The warn light that has come on is essentially the glow plug light that comes on when you first start the car -just for a few seconds at start up ( if we are on the right light - Im sure we are )...
It also doubles as a fault light - and as you have experienced some fault - the light has come on to tell - just you in case you didn't hear it ! ;)

As to what could have gone wrong - it is somewhat difficult to tell from here.... from what you describe - my initial thoughts would be the Egr valve, or something to do with the turbo side of things... but it really is difficult to tell from here...

Now, the good news is, as that light is on - it means the Ecu - computer on the car has logged whatever the fault is - as mentioned earlier - and what you realy need to do now, is locate a garage or dealer that can do a diagnostic check for you -- This is a case of plugging in a machine to the cars 16 pin diagnostic socket - and thus, the fault wil be identified and can then be dealt with...

That then ,has to be the best advice here - to have that done - and it will soon be sorted..

I know you say you are in France - so I can't help you by way of who to use - you will need to ask arond to locate a dealer or a garage that has such equipment -- many in Britain have and to be honest , i would have thought they would in France too.... you will have to ask about on that one... ;)

I wish you all the very best with it....

I Sincerely hope I have helped you - Please ask me if you need more help...

Kind Rgds, MIKE
