Question

I have an R reg 1.9 diesel clio. It has been having trouble starting, when the heater plug lighht goes off i try starting it, it chugs and spluts but doesn't quite make it. So heat the plugs up again then try it doesn't even chug then just like a clicking noise. I did this about 5 more times until the battery has died and it won't turn over. Do I charge the battery up first then try, or change the heater plugs then try or do both? Where are the heater plugs and how easy are they to change? please help i've been late for work the last 2 mornings and i don't think they're very pleased!! Emma

Answer

Hi & Welcome to justanswer...

It sounds like from what you describe that you have bad or worn out glow plugs themselves and you need to renew them.

You will see them right on the front of the engine as you stand looking at it... There are four - one for each cylinder - and as you look at the engine you will see that they are linked with wire -One wire goes to them and then a wire links all four. The tops of them are small 8 mm nuts holding the wire on...
You remove the wire - then with either a 12 or 13 mm spanner depending on their exact size you simply unscrew them - and then fitting new is a case of screw the new ones in - remember to fit both the loink wire and the wire going to the plugs...

The battery will need charging yes - but once thats done - from what you describe - Im sure that will be it sorted !

I Sincerely hope I have helped you - Please ask me if you need more help...

Kind Rgds, MIKE

Hi again ....

Indeed yes.. thats why I was trying in my limited way(!) to explain just how its done -- You may find the glow plugs are a bit tight - just make sure you get a good fitting spanner on them ( you can in fact by a ratchet tool specifically for them - its about 12£ ) ...so that you dont break the plugs...

Too- when fitting the new ones - they need to fairly tight but dont overdo it... ;)

See how you go - but you can always come back /reply - and ask me and I will help you as go with it..

best rgds... MIKE
