I was told by my dentist that I had a thrush infection. Then he said it might be an allergic reaction to a generic nightguard. Three weeks later, it is much improved but not cleared up. CHAPPED LIPS, dry mouth, sensitivity to spicy food,or crunchy bits. General discomfort inside lips. What's going on? Thanks, G.M.

Hi Nanagina,
Thrush is a fungal infection that is usually fairly easy to diagnose with clinical evaluation (looking at it). It generally looks like white patches stuck to the mouth, tongue, or gums that won't scrape off. When there is any doubt, the diagnosis can also be confirmed very accurately using a simple microscope, using a technique called a KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) prep. Typically, allergic reactions don't look like thrush. They are usually red, raised, itchy or irritated patches or areas of general swelling.

So if it's an allergic reaction, why hasn't it stopped? I feel like I have "terminal chapped lips". What is the best treatment for that?
