Question

I am having a problem with my 2003 Cavalier air system. The A/C and heat work just fine, but the control on the far right of the control panel (which changes it from feet vents/upper vents/defrost, etc) won't switch off of upper vents. The dial moves, but it flips back to upper vents quickly, and even if it stays, the air still comes out of the upper vents only. Any help?

Answer

Hello dsturbrud, look under the hood for a broken vacuum line. The system needs engine vacuum to control the mode doors and when a loss of vacuum occurs it defaults to the defroster ducts. Look for a black vacuum hose to exit the firewall and follow it to the engine. Look on your catylist sticker and look for the line that says to HVAC, that will help you locate it. You most likely have a broken or degraded hose.
