I have a 2001 BMW 540I with manual transmission, pulled out this morning and 2 minutes later the car would not move in gear, was in 3rd and engine just rev'd when I pushed the gas. The clutch seems fine, what am I looking at here?

hi there, there are a few possiblities here for your problem. listing from font of car to rear the possibilities are.

1. your clutch plate has lost its friction material.

2. your gearbox has failed.

3. your prop shaft has failed.

4. one or both drive shafts have failed.

5 your differential has failed.

however the most likely fault is the clutch plate friction materialhas been lost.

hope this helps. cheers. dave.

hi there. i'll do this in same order as earlier.

1. 3.5 hrs plus parts

2. 3.5 hrs plus parts to replace or 6hrs plus parts to strip and repair.

3. 2 hrs plus parts

4. 3.5 hrs to replace both driveshafts plus parts

5. 2.6 hrs to replace plus parts or 5hrs plus parts for strip and repair

i obviously cant give prices as labour rates vary between garages. hope this helps. if so please click on the accept advice tab and leave feedback so that i get paid.

cheers. dave.
