Question

My 2yr-old black lab's stool goes from hard to runny on a constant basis. He'll have a regular solid bowel movement and then a few minutes later, follow it with a runny stool. Sometimes the runny stool is coated in a mucus-like substance. He has a food allergy that manifests itself in an ear infection, but currently his ears seem clear and the food he eats, he has been on for months without this bowel issue. He seems to have not lack energy, but tonight has turned away his food for the first time ever. It might help to know that he has recently started to go to a pet daycare once a week (although all of his shots are up to date and the facilities seem top-notch). Could this be a parasite or a viral infection, or something else completely?

Info Request

Hello XXXXXXX,

Do you know if they give him treats or food at daycare that he is not used to?

How many days has he had the bowel issues?

Has he vomited?

The daycare has taken special precautions to note his food allergy on his file, and I would believe that he hasn't had any treats there. The solid/runny bowels have been happening for at most 2 weeks. I guess it could be noted that once or twice last week, he woke me up in the middle of the night to be taken out, which he never does.

Sorry, no vomiting either. Thank you so much for taking my question.

Accepted Answer

Sorry the site went down for a bit there.

I think he most likely has either a parasitic infection (worms, giardia, or coccidia) or he has a bacterial infection.

www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2386 giardia

www.VeterinaryPartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=680 coccidia

The first step would be to get his fecal sample checked at the vet for parasites and abnormal bacteria.

So you can sleep, you can give him Imodium AD. Try 1 tablet before bedtime and see if that takes care of it.
