Question

I have a 98 blazer, 4.3L, with a 4x4 problem. The truck used to engage and disengage the 4x4 with no problems, and then out of the blue the truck made a loud bang noise when I was driving. Almost sounded like the 4-low tried to engage. I engaged the 4x4 mode and the truck seemed to be seizing up, almost not wanting to move really. I disengaged the 4x4 and now the truck makes a clicking noise, almost as if there are gears/pulleys rubbing against each other. Any ideas of what it could be?

Answer

There is a vacuum switch on top of the Transfer case that goes bad and sucks the fluid out of the transfer case and into the vacuum lines. Check this switch first. There is 3 vacuum lines going to it. Unplug the vacuum line harness to it and see if any fluid comes out of the lines when you disconnect it. Check the fluid level of the transfer case. May want to drive it with the vacuum line disconnected a short distance to see if that clicking noise goes away. Let me know and we can go from there.
