Question

My Maltese was spayed and she is acting fine now ecept when she has the big collar on. When the collar is on, she stands like a statue... doesn't walk, sit, or lie down. Is there anything that can be used to make her more comfortable, especially at night when I can't be watching her. I was thinking of loosely wrapping her around her middle with qauze or coban (sp?) (what is used to wrap horse's ankles) or does the wound need air 24 hours a day.

Thank you,
Shelly

Answer

Hi,

It is not advisable to wrap anything around the abdomen or tummy that might tighten or move - these horse bandages can become tighter once they are in place. Bandages also are very closel applied to the wound and can lead to it becoming damp and itchy, then causing the dog to try to lik and chew.

If you cannot manage the collar, I would recommend dressing her in a tshirt, with her head through the head and froelimbs through the arms - you can cut these if they are too small. Choose a t-shirt that is of a size that it would fit snugly over the chest, not too tight though.
