Question

I have a 13 year old female cockatiel who has laid eggs a number of times over the years. A couple of months ago I had to take her to the vet (for the first time) as she was not acting like herself. the vet said she had an egg that was not completely formed in her and they gave her fluids and said she should lay it in a day or two (which she did) and has been fine since then. Yesterday she started acting like she was going to lay eggs again (loose stools, humping) then this morning she passed what appeared to be the inside of an egg (yolk and clear fluid) but no shell and she is quiet and just sitting on her perch or on the bottom of her cage. I looked in my bird book and they suggested giving lukewarm chamomile tea to drink to a bird that was not feeling well. I did this and she did drink but then threw up. Do you have any suggestions. At her age I do not want to put her through any difficult procedures.

Dear Jean: I read your posting about this 13 year old Cockatiel who is passing malformed eggs. This is a common problem in Cockatiels. I generally do a complete baseline workup (CBC, fecal, x-ray) and then start the bird on extra calcium (a liquid I send home called Calciquid) and I often will start treating these birds with a monthly hormone injection called Lupron. The Lupron causes her to stop going into a reproductive cycle every month. I am concerned that she is quiet and that she is sometimes on the bottom of the cage. She may need some fluids and a calcium injection to get her through this cycle. You can ask your vet about putting her on extra calcium at home and getting the Lupron injection. I don't blame you for not wanting to put her through any difficult procedures. The Lupron injection is not invasive or difficult for her. I would discontinue the tea since it made her vomit. I would try to get her seen today if possible since she is lethargic and at the bottom of the cage. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have more questions about this. Best wishes.
