Question

We have a one year old female eclectus parrot. Yesterday she started sneezing, she isn't eating, and she seems to be tired all the time. Nothing has changed in her environment. What can we do to help her get better?

Optional Information

Age: 1; Female; Breed: Eceletus Parrot

Just tried to make sure she is warm. We tried to hand feed her some baby formula but she wouldn't eat it and usually she loves it. Her droppings appear to have mucus in them.

Accepted Answer

I'm sorry to hear your bird isn't feeling well. She has the signs of a respiratory infection. These infections are dangerous because they can rapidly get worse. Your best decision would be to take the her to a veterinarian to diagnose and treat this with a proper medication. Not all infections are caused by bacteria, so antibiotics are not always the appropriate treatment. A vet who is experienced with birds would be best. Here is a site that will help you find one near you:

You should also make sure your bird is kept warm. If there's a warmer room in the house where you can move her cage to, that would be a good thing to do. You could also cover three sides and the top of the cage to keep warmth in. Another option is to use a clean sock, and fill it 2/3 with plain, raw white rice. Tie the open end and microwave it for about 1 1/2 minutes. Then shake to distribute the heat. Make sure it's not so hot that it could burn your bird. Put it in the cage for added warmth. You can re-warm it when it gets cool.

If she's not drinking, use a dropper to put a little water (you can also use Pedialyte) in the side of her beak. Don't put it directly down her throat because it could then be aspirated into her lungs. These are first aid measures only, and don't take the place of a visit to the vet. If you have further questions about this, just let me know by clicking on REPLY.I hope your bird will be fine.
