Answer

Hello!

I read your question regarding an ICANN registrar. I have some answers that may help you in making your decision to become a registrar.

First you must apply to become a registrar. There is a $2,500 application fee from ICANN for this step. It is non refundable and must be paid whether you are accepted or not by the association.

The annual fee (if accepted as a registrar) to maintain your membership is $4,000.

Quarterly, you will be billed from ICANN based on the domains you are registering, renewing or transferring. ICANN currently charges a flat rate of $0.20 per domain. How you handle this cost is up to you and your business, you could pass it along to the customer as a fee, etc. This is a flat cost regardless of domain suffix, .com .org etc.

Also quarterly, you will be billed an operating fee from ICANN. This fee is variable, and is paid by member organization to cover ICANN's expenses and operating costs. Currently, ICANN charges between $1,200 - $2,000 per month.

Some other financial considerations that will be taken into consideration during the membership process.

- ICANN requires you to have $70,000 in working capital. (Shown by verifiable financial statement)

- ICANN requires you to have general insurance liability coverage for at least $500,000 on your business

To begin the process of becoming a registrar for ICANN, you can print a copy of their application:

http://www.icann.org/registrars/accreditation-application.htm

You will need to print this form, and supply verification of insurance and verification of financial statements (as mentioned above).

No other documentation is required. The application is 13 questions in total and asks detailed questions regarding your business practice.

I hope this answers your question regarding becoming a registrar with ICANN! Best of luck to you in the process! If you have any other questions or need clarification on the process, please let me know. If you have found this response to answer your inquiry, please use the green "Accept" button to close the question.

Thank you!

is it a fix price for all domain extensions ?

how about other extensions such as
.ws .name .tv ...

or country domains such as

.it .us .uk ....

Answer

Hello!

I understand you would like clarification on the fees associated with registering domains as an ICANN registrar.

The initial registration $4,000 fee includes the ability to register domains under one top-level domain (such as .com). There is a $500 annual fee for each additional top-level domain that you are accredited with (such as .biz, .tv etc.)

In addition to being accredited with other top-level domains, there is still the flat fee of $0.20 per domain that you register with ICANN. This $0.20 is charged regardless if the domain is being registered, renewed or transferred.

So in summary, $4,000 for the first top-level for domain included in the initial registration with ICANN. Then $500 to be accredited to register each additional top-level domain. Plus $0.20 per transaction on each domain you register, renew or transfer.

I hope this helps to clarify the costs associated with being a registrar with ICANN! If you have any other questions or need clarification on the process, please let me know. If you have found this response to answer your inquiry, please use the green "Accept" button to close the question.

how about these domains ?

.it
.us
.uk ..

Posted by John 391 days and 21 hours ago.

Answer

In order to register top-level domains associated with these countries, you would need to be an accredited registrar with each one. Each country has different rules, costs, and policies for how to become a registrar.

For the .US top level domain, ICANN is not responsible for registration. This top-level domain is controlled by NeuStar / nic.us. You would need to apply to become a registrar directly with them in order to sell and register these domains. In addition to the application, there is $1,000 application fee. The application has 18 questions, and is very similar to the ICANN registration.

You can find a copy of the application here:

http://nic.us/registrars/accreditation/usTLD_Accreditation_Application.pdf

Additional information on how to become a registrar with them can be found here:

http://nic.us/registrars/index.html

For Italy - .it domains, they also have their own controls for who can be a registrar, and which domains are reserved.

Unfortunately I am unable to translate this site, but to become a registrar for .IT domains, you can use their website here: http://www.nic.it/

Nominet is responsible for handling registrars for the .uk top level domains.

Their registration process is less lengthy than the others. You will need to agree to their registrar contract. A complete copy can be viewed here:

http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrars/ra/racontract/

The fee schedule for all of their costs is located here:

http://www.nominet.org.uk/disputes/terms/feeschedule/

I hope this helps to answer your question!

Answer

Hello!

If you will only be working with ICANN, the following top-level domains can be registered with them.

.aero

.asia

.biz

.cat

.com

.coop

.info

.jobs

.mobi

.museum

.name

.net

.org

.pro

.tel

.travel

Each top-level domain would require a $500 annual fee to ICANN, plus a $0.20 per domain registration, renewal, or transfer.

Answer

The prices from ICANN are flat-rate. Meaning they are not variable and do not go higher or lower depending on the domain you are registering. You have to pay $0.20 per transaction.

The link stating this is here:

http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/accreditation-financials.htm

The information obtained from this link is:

"This fee is a flat fee (currently $0.20) charged for each new registration, renewal or transfer. This fee can be billed by the registrar separately on its invoice to the registrant, but is paid by the registrar to ICANN."

Listed in a previous post to this question, these are the only domains that you can register as a member of ICANN.

.aero

.asia

.biz

.cat

.com

.coop

.info

.jobs

.mobi

.museum

.name

.net

.org

.pro

.tel

.travel

It is $500 to become accredited for each top-level domain. Once accredited, you are charged $0.20 per domain transaction on each top-level domain.

As a registrar you can charge your customers or the public whatever you want for the domain names. Your prices can be variable. No matter what you charge your customers, you're only paying ICANN $0.20.

ICANN does not register .TV top-level domain names. If you are a registrar only with ICANN, they would not be able to register .TV domain names for you.

Your original question was related to the basis of becoming registered with ICANN. If you would like information on becoming a registrar with other organizations, I would encourage you to open a new question for help on that specific topic.

If this has answered your question, as it relates to ICANN, please use the green "Accept" button to close the case.

Thank you!
