Question

I recently went to a dr. for an addiction to pain killers. I had injured my ankle afew years ago. He put me on suboxone to help. In between, I had an appointment with my regular dr. When I went for that appointment, there was another dr. filling in for him. He gave me perscriptions, because I had been out of them for months. He just looked on my chart. I left, dropped off the perscriptions, and went home. Well, the (fill in) dr. perscribed the pain killers. The pharmacy called the first dr. Now he put a BLEMISH on my record that I can NEVER recieve them again. First of all, it was a misunderstanding, and second, I went to him volentary. Why would I have filled them on purpose when I'm the one that wnt for help myself? Now he tells me that even if I were to get cancer, I will NEVER be able to recieve pain meds again. I'm afraid, because I am a sick person. Can he ruin my record for life?

Answer

The law makes it the responsibilty of the patient to tell the physician the medications they are already on and medications they cannot take. However, if this doctor issued the prescriptions in error, then you need to get the doctor's office to issue a letter to the pharmacy to inform them that the prescriptions were issued in error through no fault of yours and send a copy to the RI Pharmacy Board as well.
