Question

My golden is almost 11 years old. she has always been in very good health. just six weeks ago i took her to the vet for what appeared to be a very large mole on her shoulder. they told me it was a sebaceous cyst and it should not be a problem. within a couple weeks of that it broke open and smelled horrible and bled off and on continiously. the vet removed it two weeks ago and it was malignant. he explained that the two look a lot alike in the beginning. i understand that. he said that it is a type of carcinoma that is attached to the blood vessels. her incision has healed nicely and i take her tomorrow to get the staples out. i did notice just this morning that there was some greenish goop above the incision. not part of it but higher than it just barely. the incision is quite well healed. what could this be?

Hi there XXXXXXXXX,

Welcome to Just Answer! I would like to help you with this question, but need a bit more information in order to better assist you.

So the greenish goop is coming out of the end of the incision?

Is the incision area red, swollen or painful?

it is not red, swollen or painful. it does not bother her at all. it is healing quite nicely. this goop is above the incision but i wonder if it is coming out of the top. i pushed on it a little this a.m. but nothing seemed to come out that i could tell. i wiped off what i could and it did not bother her at all. i cannot tell for sure if it is coming out of the incision. i know that sounds like an infection, however i have been very diligent in watching it and this is the first time i have noticed anything at all. i even kept a sock on her paw the first few days so she would not scratch it. since it is basically on her back i know it could not have been something crazy like from her nose or anything. we have no other animals in the house either.

And how many days ago was the surgery?

Accepted Answer

XXXXXXXXX,

I have to go offline for a bit, but wanted to leave you with an answer before I go, based on what you have told me so far.

You mentioned that your Golden goes tomorrow to have the staples removed. So, I am going to assume that her surgery was about 10days ago. What I think you might be seeing is a little reaction to the staples. Even though they are sterile when placed, they are foreign material that is puncturing the skin. The body starts to react to them, just as it would to a sliver or other material - and there can be some inflammation right around the staples or sutures themselves.

My guess is that when they remove the staples tomorrow, they will wash the area well, and ask you to wash it a few times daily at home with an antibacterial soap. Usually, this type of inflammation clears up within a few days of removing the staples/sutures.

I hope that helps!
