Question

I am needing a vehicle for 18-24 months but under some financal strain right now. I have the chance to purchase a 1997 Lexus ES 300 with 105,000 miles. Drives great, good shape, no obvious brake, tire or leak issues. I am more a BMW, VW guy, but this car is now $6800, under book. I am a fanatic about oil changes and regular maintenance, but concerned that at 105K, I will soon need major work or transmission replacement, etc. What is your opinion of this engine and vehicle, and do you believe this will be a good purchase?

Hello and thank you for using just answer. 2 websites I recommend you check out are www.kbb.com to determine the true value of the car in your area, a good site to find a deal on a car is www.craigslist.org for your area. $6988 is about fair for this car in my area, not a great deal but fair. At this mileage I would not have too many concernsm, these are great cars if properly maintained, the only 2 things aside from the usual checks that I recommend you do before you purchase is to 1- check to be sure that the timing belt has been replaced, this is due every 90,000 miles on this car and 2- have the internal engine checked for oil gel deposits by removing the front valve cover, these motors are known for oil gel deposits if not properly maintained and can result in a costly repair. Transmission/electrical/etc.... concerns are not really a concern, these cars hold up very well, I personally drive a 2000 model ES with high mileage and have worked on these for years, this is one of the higher quality vehilces that toyota/lexus has produced.
