Question

Our 11 month old lab has a very sensitive stomach. She eats the same dog food and treats since we've had her - no table scraps. A week ago she vomited up part of a squeaky toy and vomited clear mucus the next day, also. Yesterday she had diarrhea in her kennel, had normal BM last night, and had diarrhea today. Now she's drooling and had 2 bouts of it tonight. Unfortunately, both my husband and I work tomorrow, so she'll be kenneled all day. Anything I can do from home to help her out?

Hello XXXXXXX,

Did you feed her dinner tonight?

Is she acting normal and playful?

How much does she weigh?

She ate 1 Cup dog food at 2 pm. She has been acting fine and playing with our girls all afternoon, even after she had diarrhea around 11 am. I put her in her kennel when I took our girls upstairs to bathe at 7:30, and we could smell the diarrhea up the stairs around 8 pm. When I let her outside, she was drooling and had diarrhea about 15 minutes later again. She weighs 58 pounds.

Thanks,

Crystal

Yikes. Thanks for the information Crystal.

Do not give her anymore food tonight. We need to let her gastrointestinal tract rest.

In the morning, you can give her a tablespoon of boiled chicken or boiled ground beef and cooked white rice. Wait an hour before giving her anymore. I am not sure how this will work since it sounds like your family will be getting ready for the day. But, if she does not have diarrhea after an hour, she can have 2 spoonfuls of the meat and rice mixture.

That is enough until you come home from lunch or come home from work. Then give her a few more spoonfuls and wait. If she does well, gradually increase the amount. If she has diarrhea again, wait 2-3 hours and try again.

Next you need some IMMODIUM AD from the store. It comes in 2 mg tablets. Give her 1 tablet by mouth every 8 hours for diarrhea.

If she continues to have diarrhea for 24 hours she needs to go to the vet because she could get dehydrated and she may have an infection.

Water, a cup at a time, is ok. So when you go to work, put ice cubes in her dish and they will melt over time.

I hope this reduces your clean up time and she feels better soon.

Will she do OK with human food since she'd never had it before?

Answer

: ) She will love it!

Plain rice and plain chicken are easier to digest than dog food for dogs.

It's like giving kids jello when they have stomach flu.

They do make sensitive stomach diets for dogs. I use either nutros sensitive stomach or proplan sensitive stomach. My big dog has a problem if I feed him regular dog food. There are prescription sensitive stomach diets too. I am not sure what you are feeding her now.
