Info Request

Hello, if you look closely at the clear plastic lens of the head lamp it will say AL or Bosch. Let me know what type of headlamp you have.

Answer

Hello, AL headlamps are somewhat know to have failed control units. They are located on the underside of each headlamp. The headlamp must be removed to access it. There may be two on each. A larger main controller and a smaller one that controls the movement of the lamps if so equipped. The larger control unit is more common. You can remove the one that works "driver side" and install it on the passenger side to test. This control unit may be replaced without having to encode or program it. Like wise testing can be done with individual components side to side. The most common failure is the control unit itself. Use caution when working on the headlamp system. It utilizes an extremely high voltage to ignite the xenon bulbs. I would recommend disconnecting the battery when performing work. Thanks for the Question and Please Accept if I have helped you. Sincerely, Jacob.

Thank you very much for your help Jacob

I have 3 more questions to ask you

1-How can I removed the head lamp. I know it might be little bit complicate to describe

it, be cause Iast time before I find and contacted with you guys, I try to remove it but there is a black bar right on the headlamps like a stablizer bar from one side all the way to the other side, do I need to remove that bar first then do the rest of the thing to remove the headlights

2- how does that control unit look like? Like the shape or the color so will easier for me to find and how much it cost to get the new one

3-do you know any website to explain about fixing and removing and showing the shape of the parts in pictures in the bmw or any cars like self repairing websites

thanks again and thanks a million

Answer

You do not remove the bar. There are four 8 mm screws that hold in the headlamp. First remove the turn signal. This has a screw going straight down and only needs to be loosened. The signal lamp will then pull straight out. Next remove the plastic trim below the headlamp. This is just snapped into place. Start with the center most edge, toward center of vehicle and work your way outward. If you have headlamp washer jets, the cover must be removed first. Pull the jet outward and remove the cover. Next unscrew the headlamp assembly. There are two screws on the top and two screws on the bottom corners. One is toward the back on driver side. The other is approximately diagonal across from that one. You may need a flash light and extension. The control units are on the bottom of the headlamp. They are silver metal. The larger one is for the xenon and the smaller is for the directional movement of the lamps. I have heard that "Bentley" is a good manual to buy. Thanks, and please Accept if you are satisfied with my answer. Sincerely, Jacob.

sorry jacob for asking again

but my headlamp and turn signal is one piece. you know the headlamp for the last model of E46 3 series coupe which is one piece (2004-2005), the turn signal light is not seperate. you think I can remove it same way that you explain for me

and also you forgot to let me know how much is gonna approx. cost me to buy the controller

if you know

I totaly satisfied with your answers but I don't want to miss something here

sorry to send you some question everytime

thank you very much

Accepted Answer

It removes the same way except for the signal removal is not required. I believe the controller is approximately two hundred dollars. Remember to swap it side to side to make sure. And cycle the key a few times to make sure. The control unit will be screwed directly to the underside with torx screws. Thanks, and by the way if you choose to Accept my answer we can still talk without additional charges. Jacob.
