Question

I have a small flock of miniature Bantam chickens. I keep their house and yard very clean. I have not introduced any newcomers since last year. One of my hens has lost the use of one of her legs. She can barely hobble about. Do you have any ideas as to her problem? She is about two years old.

Age: 2; Female; Breed: Bantam Chicken

something that ends with mycine and is a blue liquid. I cleaned her legs/feet with it thinking that she had mites even though her legs did not look as though they did.
I dusted her for lice, again, she does not look like she has lice.
Help

Answer

Hello,

Since only one leg is affected, there are two likely possibilities. One is that an injury has occurred.

This may sound hard to believe, but one of the most common causes of lameness in birds is a tumor. Tumors on the kidney or reproductive organs put pressure on the sciatic nerve. That leads to lameness in one or both legs. There is nothing you can do at home to help if that is the problem. I think your best decision would be to see an avian vet. This link will take you to a directory:

There are infections, too, that can cause lameness, but they often affect both legs. You've tried all the reasonable things to do at home. A vet will be able to diagnose exactly what is wrong and begin proper treatment. If you have more questions about this, just let me know by clicking on REPLY.
