Question

I'm concerned my dog may have digested 4 mg of Orap (Pimozide). He is 10 lbs and usually very hyper but within 24 hrs has become listless and wants to sleep...and I have noticed he has started having some shakes and has become more aggressive. I'm wondering if this has the potential of being fatal?

Optional Information

Age: 1; Male; Breed: Toy Australian Shepherd

Already Tried:
Did not try forcing him to vomit as I am not really sure he took the medication but his actions are not normal....and he may have taken it last night(Oct 17, 2008) so I assume its too late. He still gets up and still wants to play but he spaces out and just stands in the middle of the room. He has slept most of the day unless I have forced him to get up and do something. He still has an appetite. He seems to have heavy breathing even after limited activity. On occassion I have noticed his head having the shakes.

Hi there XXXXXXXX,

Thank you for your question regarding your 10lb boy who has ingested around 4mg of Pimozide some time ago. If he had eaten this tablet within the last 3 - 4 hours we could easily make him throw it back up, however it sounds as though he ate this quite some time ago - so this is not a possibility sadly. The good news is that Pimozide is actually sometimes used in Veterinary medicine to help control twitches that some dogs have after recovering from canine distemper. These dogs generally get a dose of 2 - 4mg once daily. Your boy is quite small so this is quite a large dose of the drug, however you shouldn't seen any severe side effects other than perhaps some listlessness and aggitation. He may develop some gastrointestinal signs, but hopefully your boy will be otherwise completely fine.

Do keep a close eye on him for the next day or two and if his condition deteriorates or becomes more lethargic, do get him down to your local Vet clinic for monitoring and supportive care.

Best of luck looking after your boy, don't panic and please reply if you need any further help.
