How often to nail clip and bathe a housepet Beagle? She's 2yo and I have rescued her. Have had her since May and she is wonderful!

Hi Butter,
What a nice thing to read, that you rescued her and she is wonderful! This is why I became a veterinarian.

A short coated dog like a Beagle really doesn't need frequent bathing, unless she got into something really dirty or nasty. For routine bathing, once a month is plenty. You don't want to dry out the oils in her coat. There are lots of nice pet shampoos on the market; use something mild. Don't use human shampoo; it strips out the natural oil too much.

Nails can be clipped every 2 to 3 weeks or so, once a month might be fine. Some dogs wear their nails down more than others. I have had dogs that never need it , and I had a Jack Russel who needed it every 2 weeks. Hope this helps, Rebecca

Thank you very much. Since Butters (that's her name, actually Buttercup) is my first Beagle this information is extremely helpful. I was told that her original owner had "moved her around" because he did not want her - she wouldn't hunt and she wouldn't bark. Well, she has discovered squirrels in my backyard and she barks and loves to "tree" them to the extent that I suspect she will soon learn how to climb trees! Thanks again for your help. Happy caring to you and yours.
