I just came home and found a deer tick embedded in my dog with a big red ring around it. I cannot afford a vet at this time. What would they do if I were to bring him in? would they administer anti-biotics immediately, or wait for symptoms?

Accepted Answer

Hi Linda,
If you brought your dog into the vet..they would remove the tick and then tell you to come back in 4 weeks to have blood taken for tick titers. These tests would see if your dog contracted Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, or Ehrlichiosis. Certainly, if your dog started acting ill (in any way--vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, inappetance, weakness, etc...) then you would bring your dog back in sooner than the 4 weeks.
It is important that if you try to remove the tick yourself, that you not squeeze its body or leave its head or mouth parts still embedded in the skin. I am attaching some links that explain how to properly remove a tick.
