Question

Hi can you help me solve this problem. I have a 98 gmc sierra ex cab. My interior light comes on by itself it flickers and also will stay on steady when truck is off or on it dont matter wich way. I have pulled out the fuse to shut it off. then put fuse back in after a little while. if you put fuse back in after tacking it out light will go back on and stay on. if you wait a while then it works. light works on off with both door switches.   problem comes and goes

Answer

Hello sky 34,

Here is a brief description of the circuit operation.Your problem sounds like you either have a bad door jamb switch, headlamp switch(allowing a ground to complete the circuit when in off position),or a pinched wire to the dome, intermittently grounding the circuit.I have found screws into the wiring harness at the sun visors.

Hi how can i check to see if it is the door switches or the light switch. if its not a pinched wire. can i check it with the test light some how. i do work on cars so have basic ability to check it but dont know were to start with this. dont want to start replaceing parts. just need to test and replace to fix it. i understained that it could be 1 or 2 or 3. but how can i check this to get to the problem. thank you.

Accepted Answer

You can test it with a test light ,but remember you a re looking for a ground so hook the clip end of the test light to 12 volt source. The door switches can be checked by unscrewing them from the body ,disconnect & test circuit.Your problem must be happening to find the problem.Go to each door & perform this .After this test each leg of the circuit & if not found continue on to the headlamp switch. An ohmmeter can be used for this test also.
