Question

My son and daughter in law have three dogs that can not be in the same room at the same time without a fight. They are now expecting a baby. I have a hard time condoning the keeping of all the pets? Where can I find the best advice for them? Do you have any advice for me?

Optional Information

Already Tried:
Jack Russel, 2 mixed breeds that are large. Two females and one male. The Jack Russel is about 11 years old and female. The large male is about 5 years old. The large female is about 3 years old. The large male is excitable but is not apparently aggressive. The two females are not allowed in the same area at the same time. The Jack Russell will not back down and has ended in the vet's office several times due to fighting with the other female. I am a bystander and have voiced my concerns before a baby was in the picture. The house is full of barricades to keep the dog separate. Please give me literature to add to my advice. I am viewed as a person whose opinion is not relevant. I need something to tell them in a positive way that will protect my grandchild.

Answer

This is going to be a dangerous situation should the dogs ever fight around the baby so they need training help now to resolve this.

http://www.apdt.com/ to find a trainer to work with or asking their vet for a veterinary behaviorist referral to work on the problems before the baby arrives.

The book Childproofing Your Dog by Kilcommons and Wilson may also be a help.

If the baby is crawling and the dogs have a fight they may not even intend to hurt the baby but still could in the heat of battle or by stepping on the baby.

Hope this helps you!
