Question
My mother has COPD and is on continuous oxygen therapy at home. Her oxygen level is around 87/88 when not on oxygen (93-97 when on it). Would it be extremely harmful to take her off of it for several hours a week when I take her shopping and out to dinner, as she really hates wearing it outside the house? Her breathing is not labored when off of the oxygen and she feels fine, so am hoping a few hours a week off of it won't hurt her.

While it is likely OK, one has to ask the question - what happens if she starts to feel short of breath while walking at the mall, or out at dinner? Will you not have the oxygen there for her -- and if this episode happens and her need for oxygen increases for some reason, she may not be able to tolerate not having her supplemental oxygen available.
This is about risk and reward and ultimately her decision: should she want to not have the burden of wearing outside the house, she needs to understand that she could become very ill should she have an acute exacerbation without her oxygen.
