There are a lot of different soft ware programs that have been issued by GM to upgrade and reprogram the control modules and computers on your truck. You are also correct that a regular code reader will not do the job. To access and communicate with these systems you need a good class 2 scanner. A good scanner that will do all of the jobs you need to be able to do when working with OBDII will cost any where from 3 to 4 thousand dollars, so there are not a lot of them just laying around and many technicians can't afford them, neither can many of the smaller independent repair shops. Depending on where you live, you might try calling around. In my area Auto Zone will rent these scanners out to you by the day. But, they require a hefty security deposit and I am sure not all of their stores have them available. But, even if you have access to the computer, where are you going to go to get the new programs for the truck? Yes, you guess it. The dealer only. All of the new software programs are kept at the GM technical assistance center and can only be downloaded by authorized GM dealers. The dealer has to have a direct line by the web to the GM tech center, then the dealer can log on, search for the latest updates, down load these updates to the dealers tech 2 scanner and then from the scanner upload them to your truck. Sorry, there is no other place to access the tech center to get a hold of the newest soft ware programs. Dealerships normally charge about an hour for this service. But, if you have it done, at least then you know that you have the latest upgrades available. Thanks
