Question

My 8 year old Westie (female who has been spayed when very young) urinates daily inside the house.   She also wets her bed.   My local vet says she has no infection.   I reprimand her for doing this but she continues to wet anywhere in the home even when she has sometimes been out for a walk just a few minutes earlier.   Can you help please.

Hi Val

If she has no infection, then the other common cause, particularly in spayed adult females) is urinary incontinence. This happens when the sphincter controlling outflow from the bladder is weak and the dog can't actually control the leakage of urine.

If that is the case, then there are a couple of medications that can help by tightening the sphincter and controlling urine leakage. I don't know what the tablets from your vet were but if they didn't help, then there may be alternatives.

There is further information here:

In some cases, the cause can be behavioral but in my experience, that's a lot less common than sphincter incontinence.

Speak to your vet about trying a different medication, but in the meantime, try not to reprimand her as it's quite likely she can't help it.

All the best
