Hi.
It sounds like the actuator rod inside the column has failed. The rod is made of a sort of plastic and has a steel pin on the end of it. The steel pin probably fell out of the rod. This is the most common cause. It qill require a new actuator rod if this is the case.
The steering column will need to be disassembled to replace this. Due to the nature of this repair, this is not something I would recommend for a DIY to do.
