Question

Upon starting my van I turned the key and heard a popping sound somewhere in the ignition cylinder or the steering column. The van started just fine and I drove off. When I reached my destination, I proceeded to shut it off but it wouldn't turn off. The key turned to the off position but the van wouldn't shut off. I drove it home and had to pull a wire on the distributor to shut it off. I then replaced the lock cylinder with key thinking that would do it but the van still wouldn't shut off after starting. I am at a loss but I think it might be related to the sound I heard initially. Please Help!!!

Answer

Hi.

It sounds like the actuator rod inside the column has failed. The rod is made of a sort of plastic and has a steel pin on the end of it. The steel pin probably fell out of the rod. This is the most common cause. It qill require a new actuator rod if this is the case.

The steering column will need to be disassembled to replace this. Due to the nature of this repair, this is not something I would recommend for a DIY to do.
